How Much Will It Cost?

We need some information from you before we can quote you a price. What is on the surface currently? Can it be topped or is a grind off necessary? Is there extensive cracking? What system would you like installed? What options would you like? All of these factors effect the price. Our trained project managers are happy to give you a free estimate and will schedule an appointment soon after your call. How Long Will It Last?

We would like to see your texture last 15 to 20 years with proper care and maintenance. Proper maintenance includes regular washing and re-coating with a new color coat or sealer about every 5 years. After each re-coat your surface will look brand new.

Can I Go Over My Existing Surface?

Decorative textured concrete is usually made up of two coats – the texture coat and the color/sealer coat. Whether a new surface can go over an existing surface depends on several factors.

New Texture Coat

If the texture coat needs to be repaired or replaced every manufacturer of acrylic cement specifies that the cement be troweled on bare concrete which has been profiled to a CSP (Concrete Surface Profile) 2 or higher. CSP 2 is about the feel of 120 grit sandpaper. The surface also needs to be free of contaminants such as paint, oils and sealers. Proper surface preparation is usually accomplished by grinding the concrete.  If the surface is not ground to bare concrete, it is very likely that any new surface will delaminate. Creative Resurfacing never recommends applying new texture over old painted surfaces.

New Color or Sealer Coat

If the texture is fine but the color or sealer has worn or faded, it is possible to top the existing color or sealer as long as the surface is able to maintain it’s breathability.  Exterior concrete is a porous material which allows moisture vapor coming up from the ground to pass through it. Exterior color coatings and clear sealers are designed to be breathable, which means they allow moisture vapor to pass through it. However, if there have been prior re-coats and the coatings are continuing to fail it is a sign that it has been re-coated too many times and is no longer allowing the concrete to breathe. In that case, the water vapor pressure will push the coatings from below and cause them to fail. A grind off of the existing coatings is required and a re-color is not recommended.

Can Cracks Be Fixed?

Concrete has cracked since Roman times. Cracked concrete is generally able to perform its intended function and is not considered defective. However, cracking can distract from the aesthetics of the surface.  Cracks are generally dealt with in one of three ways – repair and cover, distract the eye, or incorporate into the design.

Repair and Cover

Cracks can be cut open, filled with an epoxy or other crack repair material and ground flush with the surrounding surface. The decorative topping is placed over the top and the crack has disappeared.  However, whether the crack returns or not depends on whether the crack is static or dynamic. A static crack is a crack that is no longer moving as when the slab has finished settling. In this case it is very likely that the repair will hold and the crack will not reappear. On the other hand, if the crack is dynamic, meaning that the slab is continuing to move, it is likely that the repair will not hold and the crack will resurface through the decorative topping. There is no material strong enough to permanently “glue” concrete which wants to move. Whether the crack is static or dynamic can only be determined by observation over long periods of time though each season. It is for this reason that our industry does not warrant crack repair.

Distract the Eye

The human eye will be drawn immediately to a crack which occurs on a flat, single color, untextured slab. There is nothing else for the eye to focus on! However, the eye can be distracted from cracks if the concrete is textured such as with any of the Coastal Textures, or if there are multiple colors and shades on the surface such as with the Faux Stain or Pebble Path color options.

Incorporate into the Design

A popular design solution is the Scoreline option. Cracks are left open and additional cuts are made in the slab so that it looks like a flagstone surface. Existing crack movement is no longer a problem and any future cracks simply add to the design.

How Long Will It Take?

It depends on the system selected. The approximate number of days will be indicated on your estimate. Exterior job schedules are also dependent on the weather.

Is It Slip Resistant and Easy to Clean?

Slip resistance and cleanability seem like two different questions but they are actually two sides of the same coin. A rougher surface will be more slip resistant than a smooth surface. However, it will also be more difficult to clean. Our products have been selected to strike the proper balance. However, should you require more or less of one or the other, we can modify the materials to reach the desired goal.

Do the Surfaces Get Hot?

A pool deck is not very useful if it burns your feet. This is the largest complaint with pavers. Some of your coatings are designed to reduce the temperature of concrete surfaces exposed to UV rays by up to 20° Fahrenheit. Color selection will also influence the temperature. Our project managers can help you with material selection and color choices to help keep your deck cool.
